Your website is an ongoing project. It’s not a task to check off, but instead a tool to regularly optimize. If your website is difficult to navigate, not secure, or not optimized for SEO, then you’re not putting your best foot forward. Endless competition exists online, so be sure you keep up with industry standards and make the use of your website as easy on your customers as possible. PixelPeople knows how crucial it is to keep your site and data practices in top-shape, so today we’ve outlined some of our favorite tips to help keep your online presence optimized from launch, into the future.

Ensure Your Site Meets Legal Requirements

Disclaimer — we’re not lawyers! That said, we know that there are legal requirements affiliated with websites and online businesses. Work with an attorney on your specific website needs. Consider your Terms & Conditions to ensure they reflect your website and business. If you make changes to your business or site, ensure that your Terms & Conditions stay up to date. If you collect personal information from your website visitors, you’ll need a Privacy Policy. A Privacy Policy is required by law, and lets visitors know how you use their personal information.

Determine Your Needs for GDPR

We previously wrote a post on GDPR and why all business owners should familiarize themselves with the regulation. Regardless of your specific legal requirements (again — consult a lawyer!), you should revisit how you collect & store personal information as a best practice. For example, if you collect email addresses, scrub your email list for low-quality data and delete it. Ensure that people who you’re emailing want to hear from you to avoid hurting your IP address reputation. Also, any place that you collect personal information, such as an email sign up, your Privacy Policy must be visible.

Upkeep Your Website Security

Don’t let website security become an unnecessary headache for you. One suggestion is having an expert review your webstie’s security and SSL implementation. Keep an eye on your site for any unusual activity or spikes in traffic, which may indicate security issues. Understand security best practices for your business, including processes and tools. We’re happy to share ours!

Revisit Your SEO Strategy

Search engine optimization helps you get more out of resources you already rely on. For example, you invested in your website to support your business; optimize it for search engines, as this is a great way for potential customers to find you and discover what you have to offer. Optimize the use of your website content such as blogs, photos, etc. to help your business be seen by a relevant, interested audience. With better SEO, search engines can more easily scan the content of your site to get it in front of the right potential customers.

Evaluate Your Website Messaging

One piece of your website you’ll want to regularly consider is your brand messaging. Your brand and the tone of your messaging should be consistent. Review your content and seek feedback from customers, employees and other contacts. Does your website messaging help potential customers understand your value proposition? Revisit descriptions of your services, products, and offerings. Are they communicated effectively? With messaging, there is always room for improvement.

Your website and customer data collection should always be a work in progress. Potential customers do research online before they decide to buy. Position your business and website in a positive, compelling way, and revisit what that means and looks like for your website.
