This year many businesses have been reevaluating the social media platforms they’re using to tell their story and engage with their audiences. PixelPeople recently decided to leave X for Bluesky, where we felt we might get more of the original “Twitter” experience and have more genuine interactions with others, rather than having curated content pushed to us. Many brands are facing similar decisions as the social media landscape continues to shift.
While some of the big platforms have been popular destinations for years, there is always a bit of churn where old platforms fade in popularity and new platforms spring up. Is that new platform you’ve been hearing about a place where you should start building an audience, or is just the flavor of the week?
New platforms can feel risky, but consider that audience size isn’t everything. Instead of focusing solely on numbers, consider where your audience is most engaged and if the platform aligns with your content style. Early adopters often have high influence, creating smaller but more-engaged communities that are valuable for brand positioning and soliciting feedback.
Citing recent examples, Bluesky is still in its early growth stages, but it has been strong for tech-savvy and culture-driven audiences. Lemon8 is gaining traction in fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. TikTok Notes could reshape visual storytelling. Threads remains in flux but offers conversational potential.
The bottom line is that if a platform fits your brand and has an active, relevant audience, it’s worth experimenting.
Here’s our team’s take on social platforms worth considering in 2025:
- Instagram – Best for lifestyle, fashion, beauty, travel, food, and e-commerce. Great for storytelling and influencer marketing.
- TikTok – Ideal for viral, short-form video. Works well for entertainment, education, retail, and food.
- Bluesky – Great for brands that thrive on humor, cultural conversations, and real-time engagement.
- Lemon8 – Aesthetic-driven brands like fashion, beauty, home decor, travel, and wellness.
- LinkedIn – Best for B2B, professional services, SaaS, and thought leadership.
- Pinterest – Strong for e-commerce, DIY, home decor, fashion, food, and weddings.
- YouTube – Ideal for long-form content, tutorials, product reviews, and storytelling.
- Twitter (X) – Best for news, tech, finance, sports, and brands with a strong, engaging voice.
- Facebook – Works well for community-driven brands, local businesses, and long-term audience retention.
- Reddit – Great for niche communities, tech, gaming, and word-of-mouth-driven brands.
- Snapchat – Best for casual, real-time content targeting younger audiences.
- Threads – Emerging platform for conversational engagement, still evolving.
The good news is, there are no wrong answers here. You just need to find a mix that suits your audiences and your communications preferences, and then start the conversation. Use engagement metrics to guide your decisions about what works and what doesn’t. And if one platform blows up, you can consider prioritizing your time on that platform and/or complementing that presence with promoted content.
